Terahertz wave (THz) is a refreshing wave of innovation in a wide variety of fields.
Located in a unique range across the electromagnetic spectrum (with a frequency of 0.1 to 10 THz and a wavelength range of electromagnetic wave radiation from 0.03 to 3 mm), terahertz technology has been studied and applied in a multitude of areas, including remote sensing, material structure detection, data transmission, communication, security and counterterrorism.
The outstanding feature of THz waves is their low energy profile and non-ionizing radiation, which means that they do not cause harmful damage to biological tissues or organisms.
This has led to THz being used to distinguish between various small biological molecules and macromolecules, and to extract biological information and detect drug components.
With the aging population and mood disorders and neurodegenerative diseases constantly becoming a burden to mankind, the effects of terahertz irradiation on animal behavior are of great value for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, among others.
Olshevskaya’s team discovered that some sensing wavelengths have a very specific effect on the structural and functional characteristics of nerve cells.
In this regard, a study performed terahertz irradiation on albino rats under stress, observing gradual changes in their behaviors, which led the researchers to discover the high potential of THz waves in neuromodulation.
Despite these advances, more research is still needed to truly understand the mechanisms of interaction between THz waves and biological systems. So far, terahertz have been studied mainly on neurons in vitro, but there are relatively few studies on the interaction with individual biological nervous systems, which poses a new and exciting field for exploration in biology.
In this sense, animal models, particularly mice, have become an invaluable tool for neuropsychiatric research. Several effective ethologically based tests, such as the open field, elevated cross maze, light-dark box and three-chamber social, among others, can provide valuable experimental data to determine the effects of terahertz irradiation on mouse behavior.
In summary, terahertz waves possess unprecedented potential not only in numerous fields of technological application, but also for the prevention and treatment of mood disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. As we move into the future, we will undoubtedly discover even more remarkable capabilities of this marvel of the electromagnetic spectrum.
